Many people assume that riding an electric bike does not really count as exercise.

After all, the motor helps on hills, and you can increase the assistance when you get tired. Compared with walking home step by step, an e-bike looks more like an easy way to get around than a real workout.

But anyone who has ridden in a low-assistance mode knows that the motor does not do everything for you. When you face a headwind, restart at traffic lights, or climb a gentle slope, your legs still have to work and your breathing gradually becomes faster.

So which burns more calories: walking or riding an electric bike?

The answer depends on whether you are comparing the same amount of time or the same distance.

Over the Same 30 Minutes, Low-Assistance E-Biking May Be More Demanding

Imagine that you only have 30 minutes to be active after work.

With an electric bike, the result depends mainly on the assistance level.

If you use high assistance throughout the ride and travel on flat roads at an easy pace, the intensity may be similar to ordinary walking. What Matters Most Is Whether You Can Keep Doing It

In everyday life, burning a few extra calories during one session is often not the most important factor.

Imagine that your workplace is eight kilometres from home.

Walking that distance every day would certainly burn plenty of calories, but the return journey would take a long time. Most people would struggle to maintain that routine and would eventually return to driving, taking a taxi, or using public transport.

An electric bike can turn that otherwise unrealistic distance into a manageable daily activity. You do not need to schedule a separate workout, and you are less likely to arrive at work exhausted, yet you are still pedalling throughout the journey.

Its biggest advantage is not necessarily that it burns the most calories per minute. It is that people are more likely to use it regularly.

For people with a higher body weight, a low level of fitness, or sensitive knees, cycling may also feel easier to sustain. The saddle supports part of the body weight, while electric assistance can reduce the need for sudden effort when starting or climbing.

Of course, cycling is not completely free from strain. An incorrect saddle height, poor posture, or unsuitable gearing can still cause discomfort in the knees or lower back. The real appeal of an electric bike is that it hides physical activity inside commuting, shopping, and ordinary daily journeys.

For a short trip to buy something nearby or collect a parcel, walking is usually the easiest option. It also gives you a chance to break up long periods of sitting.

When the distance increases to several kilometres and you would otherwise drive, take a taxi, or decide not to go at all, an electric bike often becomes the more practical choice.
