E-Bike Brakes Squeaking? 6 Sounds That Tell You What to Do

An occasional brake noise does not automatically mean your e-bike is falling apart.

E-bikes are usually heavier than conventional bikes, and their brakes often have more speed and mass to manage. A rotor may squeal after a rainstorm, new pads may need to bed in, and a light shh once per wheel revolution may simply mean the rotor is brushing one pad.

So do not focus only on whether the brake makes a noise. Listen to how it makes that noise:

  • Does it rub even when you are not touching the brake?

  • Does it scrape once per wheel revolution?

  • Does it scream only when you pull the lever?

  • Has the braking force or lever feel changed as well?

Learn these six very different brake “distress calls” and you will have a much better idea whether the bike needs drying, cleaning, adjustment—or an immediate trip to a qualified workshop.

Safety first

Stop riding if you find a fluid leak, a visibly cracked or badly deformed rotor, clear metal-on-metal grinding, severe loss of braking force, or a brake lever that can be pulled unusually close to the handlebar. Do not treat a soft or spongy lever as a normal bed-in issue.

1. Squealing After Rain or Washing

You have just ridden through a downpour or washed the bike. The moment you pull the brake lever, the bike lets out an ear-splitting howl. Release the lever and the noise disappears. After the brake dries, everything becomes quiet again.

What is probably happening?

If the brake still feels firm and provides normal stopping power, a short-lived wet-weather squeal is usually less concerning than a noise accompanied by weak braking.

What should you do?

In a safe, flat and traffic-free area, apply the brake progressively several times to help clear moisture from the braking surfaces. Reduce speed early in wet conditions and leave more distance to stop.

Stop and inspect the brake if the noise remains after drying or if the braking force is weaker than normal.

Do not:

  • drag the brake continuously for a long distance, because heat can build up;

  • spray chain lubricant, penetrating oil or anti-rust spray on the rotor;

  • test an uncertain brake on a steep descent.

2. Constant Rubbing Without Braking

You lift the wheel, spin it by hand and hear a continuous shh-shh-shh from the caliper even though you are not pulling the brake lever. The wheel may also slow down unusually quickly.

What is probably happening?

The rotor is rubbing against one or both pads. Common causes include:

  • a wheel or thru-axle that is not seated correctly;

  • a caliper that has shifted out of alignment;

  • uneven piston movement or dirt around the caliper;

  • a rotor with a slight bend;

  • insufficient pad clearance after incorrect service or overfilling.

What should you do?

Switch off the e-bike system and secure the bike before inspecting the wheel.

  1. Check the wheel installation. Confirm that the wheel is fully seated and that the thru-axle or quick release is secured according to the bike manufacturer’s instructions.

  2. Look through the caliper. The rotor should pass between the pads with a small, reasonably even gap on both sides.

  3. Check for a bent rotor. Spin the wheel slowly and watch whether the rotor moves sideways at one point.

  4. Re-centre only if you know the procedure. Caliper bolts must be tightened to the manufacturer’s specified torque. If you are unsure, let a qualified mechanic make the adjustment.

Never spray chain oil or a general-purpose lubricant into the caliper. Also avoid pulling a hydraulic brake lever while the wheel is removed unless the correct pad spacer or bleed block is installed.

3. A Rhythmic Scrape Once per Wheel Revolution

This noise keeps perfect time with the wheel. Turn slowly and you hear shh … shh … shh. Spin faster and it becomes a rapid shh-shh-shh-shh.

What is probably happening?

The rotor may have a local bend or lateral runout. It may have been knocked in a crowded bike rack, hit during transport, installed incorrectly or exposed to excessive heat.

What should you do?

Secure the bike and rotate the wheel slowly while looking down through the caliper. If the rotor moves sideways and touches a pad at the same point every revolution, you have found the likely source.

Can you bend it back with ordinary pliers?

That is not a good beginner repair. Pliers can damage or contaminate the braking surface, and it is easy to make the bend worse. A trained mechanic can sometimes correct minor runout with the proper rotor-truing tool.

When should the rotor be replaced?

Replace it if it is cracked, severely deformed, deeply damaged or below the wear limit specified for that rotor. 4. A High-Pitched Scream Under Braking

The bike stays quiet until you touch the brake. Then the rotor screams loudly enough to turn heads, and the brake may feel slippery or deliver less stopping power than usual.

What is probably happening?

Oil or another contaminant may have reached the pads or rotor. Another possibility is an uneven transfer layer from poor bed-in, glazed pad material, loose hardware or a resonance problem. Noise alone does not prove contamination—but noise plus clearly reduced braking force deserves immediate attention.

Common contamination routes include:

  • touching the braking surface with greasy fingers;

  • overspray from chain lubricant or corrosion protection;

  • fluid leaking from the hydraulic brake system;

  • using an unsuitable cleaner or workshop rag.

What should you do?

Step 1: Inspect and clean the rotor correctly

Use only the cleaning method approved by the brake or rotor manufacturer. SRAM recommends isopropyl alcohol or mild soap and water for noisy road-disc rotors. Other brands may provide different instructions, and some warn against certain commercial brake cleaners because they can damage seals or leave unwanted residue.

Use clean gloves and a fresh, lint-free cloth. Do not allow cleaner or dirty runoff to carry contamination back onto the pads.

Step 2: Inspect the pads

  • If the pads are contaminated with oil or brake fluid: replacement is the safest approach. Follow the brake manufacturer’s guidance on whether the rotor must also be replaced or can be cleaned.

  • If the pads appear glazed: recommendations differ by manufacturer and pad type. Do not automatically sand safety-critical components unless the relevant service instructions allow it. If braking performance is reduced or the cause is uncertain, replace the pads or visit a workshop.

  • If there is any hydraulic leak: stop riding and have the system repaired before installing new pads. Otherwise, the replacement pads may be contaminated immediately.

5. New Pads That Are Noisy or Lack Bite

You have just installed new pads—or a new rotor—and expected instant perfection. Instead, the first few stops are noisy and the brake does not yet have its usual bite.

What is probably happening?

New pads and rotors need a controlled bed-in process. The process builds an even transfer layer of pad material on the rotor, helping the two surfaces work together consistently.

 A soft or spongy lever, excessive lever travel, a lever that approaches the handlebar, or a fluid leak is not normal bed-in behaviour. Stop riding and have the installation or hydraulic system checked.

How should you bed in new brakes?

Follow the instructions for your exact brake and pad system. Procedures vary.

For example, SRAM’s published procedure calls for remaining seated, avoiding wheel lock-up, making approximately 20 firm slowdowns from a moderate speed to walking speed, followed by approximately 10 firmer slowdowns from a faster speed, then allowing the brakes to cool. Riders unfamiliar with heavy braking should have the process performed by a qualified mechanic.

Shimano procedures can differ by product. Some call for repeated controlled slowdowns; its newer e-bike/ABS guidance uses repeated short runs with assist switched off. The correct manual for your brake takes priority over a generic internet recipe.

What if you changed pad compound?

Check that the new pad material is approved for your caliper and rotor. Some rotors are restricted to specific pad compounds, and an old transfer layer may contribute to noise when the compound changes. Clean, replace or re-bed the rotor as directed by the component manufacturer rather than assuming every pad-and-rotor combination is interchangeable.

6. Harsh Metal-on-Metal Grinding

This sound is low, rough and unmistakably mechanical—like two pieces of metal being dragged across each other. You may also feel a harsh vibration through the lever, while braking performance drops dramatically.

What is probably happening?

The friction material may be completely worn away, leaving the metal backing plate or pad-retaining hardware to contact the rotor.

Shimano specifies that pads covered by its cited manual must not be used when the friction material is 0.5 mm or less. What should you do?

Stop riding immediately. Further use can permanently score the rotor and may lead to a serious loss of braking performance.

  1. Allow the brake to cool before touching it.

  2. Have the pads removed and replaced with the correct approved parts.

  3. Inspect the rotor for deep scoring, deformation and minimum thickness.

  4. Replace the rotor if it is damaged or below its specified service limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do squeaking brakes always mean I need new pads?

No. Temporary wet-weather noise, light rotor rub and caliper misalignment may not require new pads. Replacement is much more likely when the pads are contaminated, below the manufacturer’s wear limit, physically damaged or producing metal-on-metal contact.

Do not treat 0.5 mm as a universal number for every brand. It is the service limit stated in the Shimano manual cited here; other systems may use a different limit or a different way of measuring the pad.

A rider told me to spray WD-40 on the rotor. Will that stop the noise?

It may stop the noise by destroying the friction you need to stop the bike. Never put WD-40, chain oil or any general-purpose lubricant on a rotor or brake pad.

Use only the rotor-cleaning method approved by the component manufacturer.

Can I clean the rotor and keep oil-contaminated pads?

That is not a dependable safety repair. Pad friction material can retain contamination and transfer it back to a cleaned rotor when the brake heats up. Replace contaminated pads and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning or replacing the rotor.

Are metallic pads always noisier than organic pads?

Not always, but compounds designed for maximum heat resistance and braking power can be more prone to noise in some conditions. Rotor design, alignment, contamination, temperature and bed-in quality also matter.

Can I keep riding with slight rotor rub?

If the rub is very light, braking is fully effective, the wheel still rotates freely and the brake is not heating up, a cautious short ride to a suitable place for inspection may be possible. Stop if resistance increases, the rotor becomes unusually hot, braking changes or you are uncertain about the cause.
